The state is dominated by the majestic Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, which serves as a focal point for the region’s natural allure. The snow-capped peaks, lush green valleys, and alpine meadows create a picturesque setting that attracts trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers from around the globe.

The state’s numerous rivers and lakes further enhance its natural charm. The serene Tsomgo Lakes, located at an altitude of 3,753 meters, is a sacred site for local Buddhists and offers stunning reflections of the surrounding peaks. Additionally, the scenic Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus.

Sports for Peace and Development 2018-19 under Khelo India Scheme

Sporting activities are set to take place across four districts of Sikkim. This initiative is sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport, Government of India. Events will be held in East, West, North, and South Sikkim. The programme is being organized by the Khelo India District Level Executive Committees for each district, in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim.

The Government of Sikkim is proud to announce the establishment of the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, effective from April 10, 1995. This initiative underscores the State Government’s commitment to prioritizing sport, games, and youth activities in DIU. T he goal is to ensure that our youth are physically fit, mentally sound, and well-adjusted both emotionally and socially.

The primary objective of the Department is to promote the development of sport and youth activities, create essential sports infrastructure, and support the grooming and nurturing of athletes. By channelizing youth potential, the Department aims to achieve higher levels of performance and contribute to the overall human resource development of DIU, thus benefiting society as a whole.
